- Alchemist Lounge www.alchemistlounge.com
Alchemist Lounge is a restaurant conceived and executed by the genius restaurateurs Lyndon Fuller and Relena Erskine. For most of the past decade Lyndon and Relena have been honing their service skills in the trenches of restaurant service, saving their pennies and waiting for the right time to take their first bold step into restaurant ownership. After years of blood, sweat, and tears - not to mention a few precipitous moments - Alchemist Restaurant and Lounge opened in 2006 to rave reviews.
The restaurant's interior is high-quality and high-ceiling'ed, Relena's misty black and white photographs are framed by walls of deep orange and brick. Sights, sounds, seats, tables, and more are provided courtesy of the kismet of Craig's List. Somehow the basic style of the interior led me to try an unusual color scheme: Black and White on Red-Orange. Just finding other colors that fit with red-orange has been the strongest design challenge of this site.
The "Circle-A" logo was conceived by Lyndon and Relena, produced by Keith Clark Design, and given to me to build a website around. I chose to use Flash for its idea-generating power, and the results have been very rewarding.
Alchemist Flash Posters
My favorite part of working on Alchemist Lounge is making posters for their special events. These give me a chance to have a little fun and make funny music loops in GarageBand. Here are a few of them:
- (Apr 2007) Easter 2007
- (Mar 2007) Saint Patrick's Day 2007
- (Mar 2007) Pisco Party
- (Feb 2007) Valentines Day 2007
- (Dec 2006) New Years Eve 2007
- Veganica and Vegan Radio www.veganica.com • www.veganradio.com
Veganica and Vegan Radio are the brain-children of vegan activist Derek Goodwin. Derek has a deep love of people and other animals, and he has made it his life's mission to end the plight of oppressed animals through the practice and teaching of love and compassion. I am today a devoted vegan greatly due to Derek's example.
The websites were originally designed by Derek and constructed by Alex Jarrett. When I took over the site in 2005 Derek had many new design and feature ideas. The site was getting more complex, and we decided to employ drop-down navigation to make its features more discoverable.
The Veganica site you see today is the result of our combined efforts to make an easy-to-navigate site accessible to modern browsers. Veganica continues to evolve, and we have a lot of improvements planned for this year.
- Marla BB www.marlabb.com
Marla BB is a blues singer from New York City who now lives here in Western Massachusetts. Marla is a spirited polyglot who not only sings the blues with gusto but also teaches Tai Kwon Do and hosts two radio shows on Valley Free Radio: Marla BB's Blues & Etc and The Self-Defense Show.
Marla's site was my first mid-sized site project, and I based a lot of the layout and styles on Thinkyhead. Also like Thinkyhead the site is built using PHP to simplify the layout and templates, and to power a basic blogging system.
I was contracted to overhaul Marla's existing site and to add several new features, including audio and video, a PayPal shopping cart, a photo gallery, and a custom blog with photo uploads. Marla worked very closely with me to refine the look and feel of the site. Its central theme is that of a virtual press-kit. We took that basic concept and enhanced it with all that the web has to offer. I'm pretty happy with the results, and I look forward to doing more sites like this in the future.
